A day in the life of a Diabetic Midwife.

My name is Lisa and I am part of a team of midwives who provide care to women with any kind of diabetes during their labour and birth. Many women have gestational

diabetes and more and more women with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are having babies.  The aim is that every shift there will be a member of the diabetic team who will be looking after and/or overseeing the care of the diabetic women on labour ward so we can provide continuity of care and expertise to these women. We try to visit all the women on the antenatal ward who are being induced because of their diabetes – often these women will be on the antenatal ward for a couple of days during the induction process so they should get to meet at least one or two of us.  That way when they are admitted to labour ward hopefully they have met some of the team and feel welcome. We also visit women on the postnatal ward when they have had their babies.  We just like to check that they and their babies are doing well and that their blood sugar levels are normal. I really enjoy my role, and hope that even in a little way we are making women’s labour and birth a positive experience.
